A Beautiful Detox: Healthy Skin with 5 Simple Steps

It seems skin care products, regimens and companies are experiencing a bit of a boom these days! But lotions and serums aren’t the only thing that affects the health of your skin. Here I am sharing five simple steps that you can incorporate into your lifestyle that will have you glowing from the inside out.

Your Skin and Food

The health of your skin is often an indicator of what is going on in our inner state. This includes the nature of our blood, flow of our lymphatic system and the filtration of our liver and kidneys.

This is because it is one of our body’s detoxification organs, so when our other detoxification organs are overloaded, we can see it in our skin! By supporting our other detoxing organs and nourishing our skin, we will reap the benefits of healthy, glowing skin.

Here are my top tips for promoting healthy skin from the inside out:

1. Fruits and Veggies!

Eating a variety of different coloured fruits and vegetables will support your body systems and will send you on your way to beautiful skin. Juicing and smoothies are a great way to assist increasing the amount of produce, and thus vitamins and minerals, you can eat or drink daily. Some superstar nutrients to look out for are Vitamin A, Biotin and Zinc! Bitter foods and herbs that promote liver detoxification are also important, such as dandelion greens and grapefruit.

2. High Quality, Healthy Fats

Not only are what you eat, you are what you digest and assimilate. And did you know your skin is largely made up of fat?

Healthy Fats are a beautiful way to keep your skin supple and glowing. From incorporating nuts to seeds and avocados into your meals to using grape seed, avocado and coconut oils for cooking on high heat and olive oil for dressing your salads, these fats give your skin a natural beautiful glow. My little beauty secret is ingesting 3 tablespoons of high quality coconut oil per day for optimal gut health and glowing skin.

3. Supporting Gut Health with Probiotics

A healthy gut is vital for a healthy life. When our digestive system is breaking down our foods efficiently and completely, this both increases the available nutrients supporting our body systems and reduces the toxic load on our bodies detoxification organs.

Our digestive system is a little eco system on its own filled with good and bad bacteria. In our digestive tract there are over a trillion microorganisms that control many functions in our body, supporting our digestion, immunity, mood, energy, weight and skin. Support your gut health with both prebiotics which come from your diet to promote growth of healthy bacteria and your probiotics which is the beneficial live bacteria to promote a healthy digestive system.

4. Dry Brushing, Movement, Sweat

Dry brushing, starting at the bottoms of your feet and making your way up and around your body with light flicking movements towards your heart is a great way to get to wake up lymphatic system and help eliminate toxins from your body.

Get moving. Wake up your cardiovascular system and get your body moving to your favourite exercise. Exercise increases endorphins and creates serotonin (the “happy hormone”) a chemical in the brain that encourages a euphoric feeling which helps give your skin a healthy glow. Serotonin also helps reduce stress, which helps with hormonal balance and hence, our skin!

Sweat it out! Sweating brings blood flow to the surface of your skin, leaving you a healthy beautiful glow.

5. Water

Water, water, water. It is essentially the most recognizable molecule at a cellular level and what we are primarily composed of. Drinking at least 8-10 of large glasses per day will assist in flushing out toxins from your body, rehydrate your brain, hydrating your cells so they stay juicy and round, lubricate joints, healthy hair, strong nails and keeping your skin quenched, supple and glowing.
